Education has an important role in order to improve the quality of Human Resources in Indonesia. Universities as institutions that provide human resources are always required to improve the quality of their learning. Yogyakarta State University (UNY) as one of the universities that produce educational staff or prospective teachers, must also improve the quality of its graduates in order to compete in the world of education, both on a national and international scale. The development and availability of advanced technology, such as computer hardware and software, the internet, mobile devices, have direct impact on the practices of educational research activities and classroom learning activities, including in the fields of Mathematics and Mathematics Education.
In line with the development of science and technology, the practice of research activities and learning activities needs to be adjusted. This adjustment needs to be linked to the urgency of increasing problem solving abilities of students as prospective teachers, lecturers and teachers, practitioners and observers, and also policy makers. This problem solving ability is very related to problems and understanding of developments in society through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The discussion of STEM is inseparable from the issue of the urgency of STEM and its implementation in mathematics education. To implement STEM, it is necessary to adjust the curriculum and culture. There are challenges that must be solved when planning, implementing learning, and carrying out assessments using STEM. This is the reason for a special study on STEM in mathematics education, which is also inseparable from mathematical content such as algebra, geometry, analysis, applied mathematics, statistics, and computing. In addition to a study of STEM, a forum for researchers, educators, practitioners and policy makers to share experiences is also needed.
Considering this matter, Mathematics Education Department Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Yogyakarta State University will organize The 3rd International Seminar on Innovation in Mathematics and Mathematics Education 2019 (The 3rd ISIM-MED 2019). It is hoped that the holding of this conference can establish further international cooperation among the organizers as well as between national and international participants.
